2016 Community Report Card Update: Demographics Highlights
/SCOPE has begun updating the data in our Community Report Card. Below are some highlights from the demographics section.
Total Population
- According to the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Sarasota County has an estimated 399,538 residents as of April 1st 2016.
- This figure has increased by 20,090 people, or 5% since the last U.S. Census in 2010.
- Sarasota County ranks 27th in population growth out of the 67 counties in Florida, it is the 16th most populous county in Florida.
- Most people in Sarasota County (64%) live in unincorporated areas.
- The most populous city in Sarasota County is North Port, with 64,472 residents, or 16% of the county population.
- Out of the three cities and the unincorporated areas in Sarasota County, North Port has had the most population growth since the 2010 Census, with an additional 7,115 residents in 5 years (+12.4%).

Black/African American Population
- According to the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Sarasota has an estimated 20,257 Black/African American residents as of April 1st 2014, or approximately 5% of the 2014 total population.
- This figure has increased by 2,442 people, or 14% since the last U.S. Census in 2010
- Sarasota ranks 66th out of 67 counties in the proportion of the population that is Black/African American
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates:
- 38% of the Black/African American population in Sarasota County reside in the City of Sarasota, and make up 15% of the city’s population
- 29% of the Black/African American population in Sarasota County reside in the City of North Port, and make up 11% of the city’s population
- Less than 1% of the Black/African American population in Sarasota County reside in the City of Venice, and make up less than 1% of the city’s population

Hispanic/Latino Population
- According to the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Sarasota has an estimated 34,790 Hispanic/Latino residents as of April 1st 2014, approximately 9% of the 2014 total population.
- This figure has increased by 4,757 people, or 16% since the last U.S. Census in 2010
- Sarasota ranks 34th out of 67 counties in the proportion of the population that is Hispanic/Latino
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates:
- 30% of the Hispanic/Latino population in Sarasota County reside in the City of Sarasota, and make up 18% of the city’s population
- 14% of the Hispanic/Latino population in Sarasota County reside in the City of North Port, and make up 8% of the city’s population
- 2% of the Hispanic/Latino population in Sarasota County reside in the City of Venice, and make up 3% of the city’s population

Over 65 Population
- According to the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Sarasota has an estimated 126,595 residents that are ages 65 and over as of April 1st 2014, approximately 33% of the 2014 total population.
- This figure has increased by 8,368 people, or 7% since the last U.S. Census in 2010
- Sarasota ranks 63th out of 67 counties in the proportion of the population that is 65 and over
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates:
- 10% of the 65 and over population in Sarasota County reside in the City of Sarasota, and make up 23% of the city’s population
- 10% of the 65 and over population in Sarasota County reside in the City of North Port, and make up 21% of the city’s population
- 9% of the 65 and over population in Sarasota County reside in the City of Venice, and make up 56% of the city’s population
Civilian Veterans
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 1-year estimates there are 42,170 civilian residents in Sarasota County, or 12.2% of the civilian population.
- Sarasota County has a larger proportion of civilian veterans than both Florida (9.1%) and the United States (7.6%)
- The proportion of civilian veterans in Sarasota County has decreased by 16% since 2010.
Origins
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 1-year estimates, approximately 87% of Sarasota County residents were born in the United States.
- Sarasota County has a larger proportion of residents born in the U.S. than both Florida (76.2%) and the United States (85%)
- The proportion of civilian veterans in Sarasota County has decreased by 2% since 2010.
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 1-year estimates, approximately 23.1% of Sarasota County Residents were born in Florida.
- Sarasota County has a smaller proportion of people living in their state of birth than both Florida (35.9%) and the United States (58.5%)
